Single Review: “Out Last Night” by Kenny Chesney

March 27, 2009

Just in time for summer Kenny Chesney prepares for the release of his second Greatest Hits package in May with the release of a new single from said collection, “Out Last Night”. In a nutshell this song is pretty much everything you would expect from Kenny which ends up being both it’s greatest weakness and its greatest strength.

As a weak point, “Out Last Night” really provides nothing new. It’s a song about recalling all the wild and crazy things to did the night before, a concept that has been done over and over again countless times by other artists with more creative results. As far as a fun and enjoyable song made for the rowdy and wild urges hidden inside all of us, this one is pretty generic and in the hands of a lesser praised star, even big singers like Blake Shelton, this song would probably have a slim chance of being anything but a top 20 hit at the most.

That being said it is a great “Chesney” song. Although his vocal performance sounds a little to relaxed and laid back in some parts, this song alone trumps the bulk of the tropical ballads on his Lucky Old Sun album and it’s a nice breath of fresh air for the star that lately has not been able to live up to the quality of his early years save for great songs like “Better As A Memory” or “Down The Road”. The truth is that despite the generic nature of this song this is probably one of the most likable and entertaining songs he’s had out in a long time, at least as far as his uptempo offerings are concerned. In the end it’s only a decent offering at best, but combined with Kenny’s popularity and the dawn of summertime on the horizon it will likely earn its way up to hit status all the same.

Final Say: Favorable

I cannot stand this song! But like you said since it’s Chesney it’ll go straight to #1 and that is so sad! It’s the person and not the song that takes it straight up the charts and gets radio play no matter how ridiculous the song is! Welcome to the new world of country music!

I just heard this song on my local country station WGAR and I have to say I LOVED IT! One of my other favorites were Gotta A Little Crazy from his previous cd which I was surprised didn’t make it on the charts. Keep it up Kenny my family LOVES YOU!!!!

The songs Great!! I can’t believe you are saying it shouldn’t make it past #20 Who cares if other artists have written about the same stuff, how many different songs are there about sex, drugs, love, and money?….Yeah thats what i thought. Kenny Rocks and it wouldn’t matter who sang this song, i would still think its great!!

I am by no means a kenny chesney fan, i feel he is average at best and i am tired of hearing how great he is from all of my friends, but with that said i gotta tell you i think this song is great, the first time i heard it i liked it and the more i listen the better i like it, the song just flows perfectly and is so light hearted that it makes you feel good every time you listen, a great song for this summer season, i am a local radio dj and the song hasn’t hit our playlist yet but i think it is going to be hudge!

I actually like this song! Of course I like Kenny, but I do have my limits. The local radio station seems to be “All Kenny, All the Time” and I get tired of the same 3 or 4 songs they play endlessly. At least this is something new!
