Single Review: “Then” by Brad Paisley
Brad Paisley debuted his highly anticipated new single on American Idol this past week as the celebrated Opry members in country week. The last time Paisley came out with an effective romance ballad of this type was with his #1 “Waitin’ On A Woman” and has hit the ball out of the park countless times before with the same concept. So leave it to Paisley to take such an overused idea and make something new out of it.
His latest ballad, “Then”, has pretty much every quality to make a hit. It’s got a one word name, attractive songwriting, a delicate performance, heck it wouldn’t be a stretch to think that Paisley’s record setting streak of #1 hits is only going to continue with this power ballad. This is one of those songs that has the potential to educe goosebumps with the first listen and draw the listener right into the romantic message in a way that either makes you cherish your significant other even more, or just make you feel good about who you have to share your life with.
Of course these factors do not make for an absulutely perfect offering. This is a love song and with that it takes away a little bit of Paisley’s thunder after a string of relatively universally unique hits. In a way this song humanizes Paisley and shows that he’s not always about pulling off a good prank and that he can work for his credit, but that being said the lack of pure creativity behind the concept leaves a little to be desired, but not enough to say this song is anything short of a deserving and sure fire hit.
