Single Review: “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus

March 15, 2009

Miley Cyrus joins her dad as a country artists, at least for one song right now, as she hits country radio for the first time as a solo artist. Straight from her upcoming movie for Hannah Montana, it’s “The Climb”.

Now this song is about as cliche as it gets message wise. Using her fan base and her character as a springboard, Miley’s first real ballad for radio tackles the idea that life isn’t about where you end up, but the journey getting there. Personally the journey is the worst part from my perspective, but I suppose that this concept is generally positive and inspirational to her young G rated fans who still have a long road ahead of them.

However, it’s not the cliche message or the G-rated content that litters this song that marks it down, it’s the general presentation. As experienced as she is, Miley tries way way too hard to make this song a heart-wrenching and magical pop-driven hit. She deserves respect for her performance on the verses which do in fact provide a delicate and sincere feeling to them, but once she hits the chorus it’s littered with over the top vocal tricks and seemingly uncomfortable notes and lyrical presentation that end up both degrading and awkward.

Now I am not shooting down America’s favorite pre-21 sweetheart, I’m simply grading this song as a country hit. It will certainly appeal to the very young fan base that has helped Miley reach her star status, but it does little to support any very mature quality to her music. I believe Miley, if she approaches her music with a lot more maturity and perfection as Taylor Swift did in much of her material, could potentially be a powerful presence in the country world, but a song like this, cliche or not, effective or not, just doesn’t cut it.

Grade: D+

I agree with your review of Miley’s single. However, to say that she needs to approach her music in a mature sense as does Taylor Swift isn’t ringing true to me. There’s nothing at all mature about Taylor’s songs or voice. I am really tired of Taylor’s barrage of “teen love gone wrong” music on the air waves.

I actually find some of Taylors material quite mature for her age.

I thought “Tim McGraw” and “White Horse” were two stand out songs. However “Picture To Burn” and “Teardrops On My Guitar” would fit right in with Miley’s song. That’s what I meant.

What The Fuck?! I hate you. Did you just said that Teardrops On My Guitar and Picture To Burn were not fit for her? And it’s best for Miley? How dare you said that.. BOO-HOO… stupid.

Disagreed. The Climb is amazing and actually mature. It does have a country tune which is actually good for her voice. She is very talented and hits the chorus excellent. I don’t see the immaturity in the song…maybe you could clarify because all songs have a message and in the song she doesn’t refer to any “immature” thing. Taylor Swift is an excellent singer too, but she doesn’t really have much maturity in her first album, but it worked for her, and she has a fan base from all genres and ages.

Sorry guys, I just don’t like “The Climb”. I find that song really dreadful and depressing. It didn’t fit to the movie at all and could at least be an end credit song. It destroyed the movie for me.

    But I like this review

The Climb is a very nice song . . . just would sound so much better with someone else singing it . . . like say Patty Griffin or Martina McBride.

Just heard the climb – she is DEFINITELY straining her voice horrendously in effort to make it sound powerful
It just makes her sound reedy
    Powerful voice fail

    Also the lyrics are corny
Also WTF that’s the least country song I’ve ever heard with the country label
And that’s including Rascall Flatts (I love em but they’re way more poppish than country)

    Good review mate.

I do feel very frustrated that just cos she’s got Billy Ray’s blood in her (and he was never exactly reverent of traditional country music) and she’s BFF’s with Taylor, this song hits country radio. Like somebody already said, this song is so NOT country it’s not funny.

Then again, it fits right in with the direction country’s taking these days. Not much cup of tea anymore.

Hmmm… I disagreed. I think “The Climb” is very good to her especially in her voice. There’s no such “immaturity” in that song. It’s just that her music video in The Climb has “too much drama”. And Miley is very mature yet it’s not fit with her age yet. But there’s no wrong about the song The Climb.

Gus:Ahem, Taylor Swift is way over matured than Miley I mean her voice and her songs. Beacause Taylor’s songs were very approaching to teens now. I don’t like the fact that you did said that Teardrops on my Guitar and Picture to burn were not perfect for her? How dare you.. BOO-HOO

I like the ‘The Climb” but I agree that she does strain her voice. And seriously, Taylor Swift is not mature at all. I’m so sick of her love themed songs. Write about something else every now and then.

You’re a loser, climb is not a kid’s song and by saying it is you are offending not only miley, but any adult who enjoys it. Its beautiful in its melody and her vocal performance in it is the best she has ever done, really emotional and her voice is sounding much better than before.

And there’s nothing”g-rated” about the words. I’m rolling my eyes right now… Whats cliche is you implying its a kids song just because miley has a large kid-fanbase due to her hannah montana shows. It does not mean her music is all for children and clearly she is trying to break out of the whole kid’s singer image.

And Reality check: Just because you don’t enjoy it does not mean it is not a good song. Since when was your mere, dull opinion in any way representative of a song’s worth? Don’t flatter yourself….

And also if you had a brain you’d know that “its the climb” does not simply mean the journey itself is the important part. That shows how simplistic your understanding is. She means the success and progress one has whilst on the journey is the important part…DUUH….

This song doesn’t do it for me. It might be an ok song if it were sung by somebody who has experience enough to possibly know what the climb was all about. It sounds like a 16 year old girl trying to act like she’s experienced life already. Leave songs with this type of message to the veterans.

i completely disagree! first of all, i really love miley’s “the climb”. it really is inspirational and i love the sincerity of the song. everyone in general could relate to the song. Speaking about maturity, how in the world did taylor’s songs became mature as compared to this song?! All of taylor’s song even her voice is just so teeny and the messages are all about teen young love and stuffs like that. It’s just common pop for me which people will eventually grow tired of after awhile. BTW, i love miley! her character and her personality, her music, and her style!
