Single Review: “Sideways” by Dierks Bentley

March 8, 2009

Bentley’s second single from his recently released album Feel That Fire is about as average as it gets from an artist of his stature.

It’s very easy to give in to the high energy entertainment quality that Bentley offers up in his traditional and typical fashion throughout this party song. However, there is absolutely nothing lyrically to set it apart from other songs, a very strange slip-up from Dierks who usually manages to stand on his own even if he tackles a familiar subject matter. This time however his dedication to a free weekend off of work is no more impressive than Alan Jackson’s “It’s 5:00 Somewhere” or “Yee-Haw” from Jake Owen.

This song isn’t a bad song. It is entertaining and adicting musically, but lyrically it is the first situation I can recall where Bentley makes a swing and a miss. What he provides in energy is challenged greatly by the songs lack of originality which makes for only an average song from an artist who is otherwise a relatively standout act.

This song is playing on the radio as I type this and I agree with you, but then again I have never cared for Dierks’ voice. His voice is just blah on all his songs!
