Single Review: “People Are Crazy” by Billy Currington
Billy Currington is probably one of the genre’s biggest underdogs. He’s managed to score very respectable charting albums, usually within the top 3, and he’s scored a few big #1 hits under the noses of the competition. In the typical fashion of the day, Billy takes his turn at covering the all too common concept of the way the world is in the story of probably one of the luckiest men to ever find his way into a song.
Billy’s second single from his latest album Little Bit Of Everything is actually one of the better tracks from the project. The story follows a young man who gets together with a stranger, an older and seemingly more experienced man, at a bar. Although the entry into the interaction is a little rocky, the two eventually begin to converse about the way the world is and how their separate experiences have taught them both that people in this world are really crazy, but there is still some good to be found. The end has the main character discovering a while later this stranger was a millionaire who, out of the goodness of his heart and inspired by his conversation with this young man, left it all to the narrator.
In some instances Currington’s mid-tempo ballad seems to tackle some material that seems a little to strong to conform to the smooth approach he makes to the song, but overall the message is clear and nicely presented. Currington provides a soft and peaceful impression of his character as he sings the song, which makes the experience all the more believable in the end. However, the song is a little overwritten. Particularly the last verse seems superfluous to the point. It is true that the whole concept surrounds how people are crazy and this world is messed up, but there is much more good in it than we know. However, the idea of a millionaire giving his fortune away is a little over the top for this otherwise simple and peaceful look at society and life. So the only thing that flaws this song is that it takes a smooth approach to a strong concept, which works, but the lyrics throughout tend to stray from the otherwise peaceful and simple manner of the storyline.

As I said in my review of Currington’s album, this plot is much like Sawyer Brown’s “Wantin’ And Havin’ It All”, but it lacks the moral depth. Out of the two, Sawyer Brown’s song is clearly the better song, which I hate to say about a Braddock composition.

The story is apparently true. I was listening to the radio station in my area and there was an interview with Billy. He claims it to be a true story that happened to him or one of his very close friends, but he won’t say exactly who. More to the song’s story, he went on to tell it was an old man who no one cared about, his kids never came to see him, just waiting on their father’s fortune. And that particular “friend” of Billy’s befriended the old man, who then turned the fortune over to the last person to really pay attention to him; afore mentioned “friend”
the song is not based on a true story. It wasnt even written by him, he only co wrote it.
