Single Review: “I’ll Just Hold On” by Blake Shelton

February 23, 2009

With summertime and spring rolling in and getting closer my taste in new music is beginning to shift. Blake’s new song is a pretty good example of how music can feel good, but that doesn’t necessarily make for a flawless release. His second single from his latest album Startin’ Fires is a self defeating tune centered around a man in a relationship he knows is going to end and hurt him, but he wants to hold on as long as he can until it does.

That being said the song provides an attractive and addicting feel through its musical production and the chorus draws the listener into the kind of self-torture and longing that Blake’s character is experiencing in this song. However, other than the attractive production and gripping and emotional chorus, the rest of the song is kinda left in the dust. The verses are not as effective as they would like to be and are often overshadowed by the more obvious aspects throughout the song. Normally this wouldn’t be that big of a deal, a downgrading quality, but nothing to fuss that much about. What makes it such an issue here is that it’s not characteristic of Blake who has become well known for his ability to carry a song throughout its entirety and grip the audience from the first word to the last, not just where it counts at radio.

So artistically Shelton does a little backtracking here, falling a little too deep into mediocrity considering the perfection he has shown in past efforts. Still, his emotional status and vocal expression manage to conform flawlessly to the chorus and the character and the overall song sound good and catchy. I guess it would be fare to say then that in the real world of radio and stage performing this song would be pretty effective in many ways, but underneath this lies a lack of perfection and significance in the verses that is very uncharacteristic of one of modern country music’s most effective balladeers.

I can not believe the words to this song! It is like someone opened my chest and read the words on my heart! There are no lyrics that capture my feelings better than this! I love Blake Shelton and this makes me love him even more! Plus…. the song that this reminds me of is for a man named Blake! Wow!
