Single Review: “It Happens” by Sugarland

February 19, 2009

The dynamic duo of Sugarland decided to pull back their previous consideration for a new single with “Love” and throw out a new single, one with a more upbeat and straight forward message for their listeners in these tough times simple titled “It Happens”.

As I mentioned, this song is certainly upbeat and able to get your blood flowing and have you singing along by the end of the first chorus. The whole story surrounds a series of unfortunate events that happens to Nettle’s character, everything from crashing her neighbor’s car into her ex’s by chance to waking up late and getting to work unorganized and out of breath. In a way targeting the tiny errors in life is actually a smart move for these two. Most songs like this recently tend to focus on the failing economy or portray a more negative side to this particular message. “It Happens” does not.

Instead, this song focuses on the little tiny things that can ruin a day and add to the all to common universal depressants of everyday life in America and is careful not to focus on some of the more intence problems people may be facing. Simply put, it reminds us that we aren’t the only ones who go through these problems and sometimes stuff like that just happens out of our control. Nettles and Bush may not have the most unique song here, but its upbeat and optimistic feel combined with its “get over yourself” approach make it one of the more mature and significant songs out right now.
