2008 CMA Awards Predictions

September 16, 2008

ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR
Kenny Chesney
Brad Paisley
George Strait
Sugarland
Keith Urban

Gonna Win: Kenny Chesney – He’s had a blow away year, as usual, and as far as touring (the major winner of this vote) goes he is on top and has ben for a while. You can hate him or love him, but for an artist to earn a following that dedicated is quite deserving and impressive.

Should Win: Kenny Chesney or Keith Urban – These guys are the top performers in quality and income. The only one with the power to take them on is Brad, but I believe Keith and Kenny have him beat.

FEMALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR
Alison Krauss
Miranda Lambert
Martina McBride
Taylor Swift
Carrie Underwood

Gonna Win: Carrie Underwood – I am a personal fan of Taylor as an artist, but the quality of her music and her career’s popularity do not compare to Carrie. Carrie has been on a non-stop #1 streak her entire career and has been one of the top selling album artists of the year. I think she’ll reclaim her spotlight this year.

Should Win: Miranda Lambert – Carrie and Taylor are the top two contenders, but I think Miranda with the improvement her career has had the past year deserves this for a change. Who knows she may come out as the dark horse here this year.
MALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR
Kenny Chesney
Alan Jackson
Brad Paisley
George Strait
Keith Urban

Gonna Win: Brad Paisley – Look at radio, albums, tours, everything comes back to one man and that is Brad. While Kenny is more of a tour guys, brad has dominated with 7 or 8 #1’s in a rw and has even scored 5 off of one album, a very difficult and rare accomplishment. It is only proper that Nashville’s golden boy takes this again and proves he is up there with the best of them.

Should Win: Brad Paisley – Need I say more on the matter.

NEW ARTIST OF THE YEAR
Jason Aldean
Rodney Atkins
Lady Antebellum
James Otto
Kellie Pickler

Gonna Win: Rodney Atkins – With four #1s under his belty and a platinum selling album Rodney has been one of the hottest new acts, but has been under the radar reguardless. His acomplishments will likely bring him to win this one as the most successful artist in the catagory.Should Win: Rodney Atkins – While Kellie is also a good bet I am willing to bet money on Rodney. Despite a flopped 5th single from his album he has still overshot the rest of the nominees and thus deserves it the most.

VOCAL GROUP OF THE YEAR
Eagles
Emerson Drive
Lady Antebellum
Little Big Town
Rascal Flatts

Gonna Win: Rascal Flatts – The top group in the genre, no-one can compare to these guys right now. They are the favorite and the biggest selling and earning. No contest.

Should Win: Rascal Flatts – SO they’ve been on a dry streak as far as quality with their songs, but they have still managed to bring most of them to #1. When you look at who they are up against these boys really do deserve it with their secured and solid fan base and radio and album success.

VOCAL DUO OF THE YEAR
Big & Rich
Brooks & Dunn
Montgomery Gentry
Sugarland
The Wreckers

Gonna Win: Sugarland – Brooks & Dunn are the next best and possible choice, but it is quite probable the voters will go with the fresher, higher selling, more recently successful Sugarland here.

Should Win: Sugarland – Big & Rich and the Wreckers are of the scene, Montgomery Gentry is just getting back into their groove and Brooks & Dunn are on a dry spell compared to their former successes. However, Sugarland have been quite consistant and favored among critics and fans.

SINGLE OF THE YEAR (Award goes to Artist and Producer)
“Don’t Blink”

ALBUM OF THE YEAR (Award goes to Artist and Producer)

19 Records Limited/Arista Nashville

SONG OF THE YEAR (Award goes to Songwriter and Primary Publisher)
“Good Time”
Alan Jackson
EMI-April Music/Tri-Angels Music

MUSICAL EVENT OF THE YEAR (Award to each Artist)
Josh Turner featuring Trisha Yearwood
“Another Try”
MCA Nashville

MUSIC VIDEO OF THE YEAR (Award goes to Artist and Director)
“Don’t Blink”
Kenny Chesney
Directed by Shaun Silva

“Good Time”
Alan Jackson
Directed by Trey Fanjoy

“Stay”
Sugarland
Directed by Shaun Silva

“Waitin’ On A Woman”
Brad Paisley
Directed by Jim Shea

“You’re Gonna Miss This”
Trace Adkins
Directed by Peter Zavadil

Gonna Win: “Waitin’ On A Woman” – Brad always goes all out for his videos. With Andy Griffith included he has no dought grabbed the attension of voters yet again and is the most obvious choice to win here.

Should Win: “Stay” – Some call it boring, I call it powerful. This video was made simple and thats how it needed to be. Jennifer got into the part and lost it which they took advantage of, with her concent, and added to the video to show the true power and deep message that the song has. Nothing could have shown this song off more than the simple and tearjerking performance that Jen provided.

“I Saw God Today”
Rodney Clawson/Monty Criswell/Wade Kirby
Big Red Toe/Extremely Loud Music/Steel Wheels Music/Blind Mule Music

“Letter To Me”
Brad Paisley
EMI-April Music/New Sea Gayle Music
“Stay”
Jennifer Nettles
Jennifer Nettles Publishing

“You’re Gonna Miss This”
Ashley Gorley/Lee Thomas Miller
EMI Blackwood Music/New Songs of Sea Gayle/Noah’s Little Boat Music/Songs of Combustion Music

Gonna Win: “You’re Gonna Miss This” – This song acts as Trace Adkin’s biggest hit to date, his comeback attempts, and one of this years most popular and most played songs. Need I say more?

Should Win: “You’re Gonna Miss This” – I think its the year of the life songs. Trace deserves a shout out for once and for what this single was worth to him and his fans both figuratively and literally it is very deserving.

Reba McEntire and Kenny Chesney
“Every Other Weekend”
MCA Nashville

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss
“Gone, Gone, Gone”
Rounder Records
Sugarland featuring Little Big Town and Jake Owen

“Life In A Northern Town”
Mercury Nashville
Kenny Chesney (duet with George Strait)

“Shiftwork”
BNA Records

Gonna Win: “Gone, Gone, Gone” – Alison is a favorite and the CMA voters are usually all for traditional compilations like this. It is truely a musical event in itself and will likely make some waves among the nominees.

Should Win: “Life Is A Northern Town” – Sugarland came from nowhere with this song to demolish the original version of the song for a much, much more attractive and enjoyable version. Not to mention they brought in tour mates Little Big Town and Jake Owen to help release the most successful album cut of the year.

“Gunpowder & Lead”
Miranda Lambert
Produced by Frank Liddell and Mike Wrucke
Columbia Records

“I Saw God Today”
George Strait
Produced by Tony Brown and George Strait
MCA Nashville

“Stay”
Sugarland
Produced by Byron Gallimore, Kristian Bush and Jennifer Nettles
Mercury Nashville

“You’re Gonna Miss This”
Trace Adkins
Produced by Frank Rogers
Capitol Records Nashville

Gonna Win: “You’re Gonna Miss This” – I’ll go with the long-shot here. This single not only revived a faulting career for Trace, but also touched thousands to become one of this years most moving ballads.

Should Win: “You’re Gonna Miss This” or “Don’t Blink” – These two songs touched hearts and souls spreading the message of living life for what it’s really worth. This message has been done over and over again, but not sense “Live Like You Were Dying” has it been puled of with so much perfection.

Cowboy Town
Brooks & Dunn
Produced by Tony Brown, Ronnie Dunn and Kix Brooks
Arista Nashville

Good Time
Alan Jackson
Produced by Keith Stegall
Arista Nashville

Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates
Kenny Chesney
Produced by Buddy Cannon and Kenny Chesney
BNA Records

Troubadour
George Strait
Produced by Tony Brown and George Strait
MCA Nashville

Gonna Win: “Good Time” – 20 songs all written and produced by Alan Jackson. He returned to his roots and went all out in every tracklyrically and vocally. The traditional aspect of this album and the work Alan put into it as a solo artist and writer, as well as producer, will likely get it every possible vote it can.

Should Win: “Carnival Ride” – Although its not Carrie’s best work it acts as the perfect mix of contemporary and traditional country and has helped secure Carrie’s place as a country artist after her first album was an all out introduction to this American Idol alumni. The contentains not only three #1 hits, but many more valuable and powerful songs as well.

Sure wish Keith Urban could pick up EOTY award! I’ve seen Keith and Kenny many times and Keith, IMO, outshines Kenny in every way! I will never understand how come Kenny is so popular and why so many people thinks he works harder than any other artist. For Keith to sing great and play great at the same time and make you feel like he’s singing right to you and plus play other instruments. Well anyway, just my opinion! I’m sure you’re right when you say the award will go to Kenny again unfortunately!!

BTW, I hope Sugarland wins for In A Northern Town!! That was an outstanding performance at the ACMs. It deserves to win big time!
