Single Review: “Already Gone” by Sugarland

August 25, 2008

The second single from Sugarland’s new hit album is nothing short of well, ordinary and that is really unique coming from these two who have consistently stretched musical boundaries sense the separation from their third member a while back. “Already Gone” has Jennifer singing through the eyes of a girl who is coming into her own and joining the world for the first time and about how she makes her transition into the world and its many trials and turns.

The song takes place in three parts, the first being her leaving her home as a young girl, the second when she jumps into love and loses her innocence and the third when that same man and her split peacefully struggling to discover what went wrong, all the while one ending connects them all. In the end of each mini-story she find herself gone in some way, literally or figuratively. What takes this song down a notch in relation to what Sugarland have at their disposal is that it touches on messages that are oddly familiar and consistent in country music. There isn’t much of anything “new” about it, however it does have the potential to become a decent hit.

Grade: B+

I’m actually really surprised that this is being chosen for their second single, I was really expecting “It Happened”, “We Run”, “Love” or “Keep You”. It’s not that I don’t like this song, or even that it’s a bad choice but it wasn’t particulary my favorite on the album. I’d even put “Joey” ahead of this one to be released.

This is by far my favourite song on the album. The last verse when the couple is going their seperate ways, the way Jennifer Nettles sings it gives me tingles. Truly a wonderful song
