Single Review: “What I Cannot Change” by LeAnn Rimes

July 26, 2008

Despite how lenient and forgiving I have been in my past reviews, this single need no pity. This truly is flawless. LeAnn takes a powerful and very emotional song about facing life and the things you want to, but can’t change about life and the world around you. LeAnn explains how she wishes she could let go of the things she can’t change from simple family matters to world issues, but she can’t and instead she concludes “I will change whatever I can“. She looks at the issues, one specific one being an issue between her character and her parents, and comes to such realizations that despite her efforts “it’s easier to please the world than it is to please myself“.

With brutally honest and heartfelt songwriting and vocal renditions including “a chorus that resolves into what sounds like a whispered prayer” (the 9513), this song is by far one of LeAnn’s best and will give the entire 2008 catalog a run for it’s hard earned money.

Grade: A+

I think that LeAnn has an incredible talent and wonderful voice. Her strong voice is unwavering, perfectly in tune, and powerful in expressing feeling and soul. Isn’t that what music is about? So many make the mistake that music is all technical…who hit the highest note and if they did it right, if someone annunciates, and so on. I think many viewers forget that music is art, feeling, and magic all expressed through something far greater than talking. Music holds us together. She does an amazing job in that she really portrays true emotion and something we all can relate to.
