Single Review: “Holler Back” by The Lost Trailers

May 13, 2008

I enjoyed the first album these guys came out with, which featured the two underrated hits “Call Me Crazy” and “Why Me”, and I was hoping they would have another shot at success. To keep in contention with the rock/country dominance that seems to have become a great portion of country radio, the boys have released a song that serves as a rival to the popularity and lingo associated with pop and hip hop music. As many others have pointed out, and as you may probably guess, “Hollaback Girl” from Gwen Stefani is probably the most obvious tune that this song intends to parody.

All kidding aside this redneck “John Rich brand” song contains a very sly play on words in some very decent songwriting. A Holler not only serves as a slang term in hip hop for calling one’s friend but it also serves as a southern term in place of “hollow”. This song takes perfect advantage of that as lead singer Ryder Lee plays a character with a hip hop friend who oddly makes him feel out of place with his slang. In revealing that, in his terms, a holler is back in the woods where hillbillies, rednecks and genuine country folks get together to party, Ryder turns this song into a compare and contrast bit between two walks of life. The result is a very entertaining attempt from the band to adapt to the changing genre through a combination of minor conformity and well established writing talent. While it may be out of place right now, these guys finally caught up to the likes of Jason Aldean, Big & Rich and Gretchen Wilson and are attempting their big break with a hard core country/rock tune that just might do the trick.

I haven’t had many chances to hear this song, but I’m looking forward to hearing it again and again. I just really like it.

Please no comparison with Big and Rich and much less that non talented Gretchen Wilson. These guys have talent!
