“Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind” by George Strait

Album:“Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind”, “50 #1s”

Chart Peak: #1

City, State, or Town: Fort Worth, Texas

One of George Strait’s many #1 singles once again brings his home state of Texas into the spotlight. Spoken through the persona of a heartbroken man, George reveals a story of struggle and desperation as a man wonders if the woman that left him still thinks of him sometimes. George has always been a spokesperson for the greatness of Texas towns and the state itself. However this time he sets story inside the town of Fort Worth meant to draw attention to the concept of love inside familiarterritory rather than to advertise the greatness of the town itself.

As I said, George sings this tune through the persona of a heartbroken individual who is trying desperately to understand whether his lost love still thinks of him or not. From line one it is revealed he is a resident of Fort Worth, Texas and it is understood that that is where he and his former lover resided as well. This is apparent because as he reveals that his girl has been with another guy and that he is haunted by a sense of jealousy asking “does Fort Worth ever cross your mind?” In just four short lines it becomes very clear that there is a sense of struggle and frustration in the man. He finds that cold beer isn’t helping him move on and that he still wants her more than ever when she is with the other man.

In a much bolder statement to his former lover, he asks her to help him burn the bridge between them. As we already know, he suffers from an powerful connection that still exists for him between the two of them and he can’t seem to sever it and be on with his life. Thus is asks his ex if while she is burning her bridges if she can help him burn his as well. The memories that he has with her are just to hard for him to leave behind. The chorus brings his emotional suffering to its peak as he reveals that his girl left him for the other man in Dallas. With this is his mind he still longs for that one hint of regret from her that she left him in Fort Worth alone.

George is at his best when he decides to shift from the reputation songs and mix a message in with his call outs to the Texas towns. In one of country music’s most definitive messages of heartbreak and suffering, George shows how just the memory of where two people fell in love and spent all their time together can be as pleasing a a return to that very place. The man in the song long for his ex to remember Fort Worth in hopes that she will rekindle deeper memories and come running back to him. In addition to the message in the lyrics, it should be no surprise that this song gave great gain to the popularity and significance of Fort Worth among country fans world wide.
