Single Review: “More Than I Deserve” by Christian Kane

April 13, 2008

Many of you may remember Kane as one of the main characters in Carrie Underwood’s video for “So Small”. Not only is Christian Kane a talented actor, he is also a well established country musician. This single will become the debut attempt from Kane to break into the country music scene. He starts off not to bad, with a vocal that hits me a true country greatness. Even the song itself isn’t that bad. It has Kane speaking to the woman he loves and explaining that she’s more than he deserves for who he is.

What I don’t like about this song is the production. The verses are very soft and the chorus is very loud. It actually takes me by surprise and confuses me as to what kind of artist Christian is and what kind of sound he prefers. While this song may be a decent start, it doesn’t show me who Kane is or what he’s all about. It shows a great voice and nice message, but a confusing expression of his “sound”.

I agree, the Columbia songs are over produced. I’ve actually been
listening to Kane for a few years, and I must say that I prefer the stuff
he’s produced himself. He does have a great voice, but the emotionalism
of his singing has been glossed over and smoothed out, and it’s a
shame. It really adds so much to the music.

I’ve been a Kane fan since the beginning. Though I really preferred the original versions of the song, and do also think they’ve added in too much and are drowning him out a bit, the core of the song & Chris’s vocals are still great.
I personally think it rates higher than a C, though. This has always been one of my favorite songs and I do believe it is a good choice for a debut single.

As shamangrrl said Columbia songs are often over produced. and I too have been listening to Kane for many years now and I too prefer most of the music he has produced himself. ‘More than I Deserve’ is my favorite song of his and I much prefer the original acoustic version he released. However I do love the start of this new version and think if the chorus had carried on with a more similar flow I may have liked it more than the original.Christian has such a unique lovely voice and writes such beautiful lyrics. I think it is always a shame when it is overpowered by backing music.
