Single Review: “Another You” by John Rich
Before reviewing this song in its entirety I have to give some credit to Rich. I hate his personality and he is pompous and full of himself, but damn does this guy know what he’s doing. His only problem is that he’s so confident in his own methods that he keeps pushing it on everyone else and believes that his way is the only way and the best way in Nashville. As far as songwriters go however this is the guy you want to write with and this song is proof of that.
“Another You” is the first single from Rich’s upcoming solo project. With the controversy of Nashville Star and Gone Country and Rich’s many self-righteous public addresses overshadowing him, it’s easy to overlook what is the real talent John brings to the genre and that is his writing. To make it simple, musically and vocally this song is a mess, a very big mess. The only thing I like about it at all is that the lyrics come off as a very simple and true country song. Interestingly enough, this song reveals that there really is very small bit of legitimacy behind this huge ego. Rich can write a song lyrically without even trying and turn it into a hit…most of the time.
There I’ve given him his due credit…but writing good lyrics does not make up for the very lacking production, surprisingly poor vocal presentation and uninteresting quality that Rich offers with his own material. he may be able to create some of the most unique and interesting projects from his fellow artists from all over the genre, but ironically enough he makes himself sound like crap. So, to conclude, I respect John as a writer, the man is great at it, but if there was anything else he had to offer that would help him redeem himself at all he failed horribly to apply it to his debut solo single.
