Single Review: “I Can’t Outrun You” by Trace Adkins
The second single from Trace Adkin’s album “X” is probably one of his best performances and by far one of the best singles of 2008. He offers up a balled of torture as his character attempts to forget his ex-lover but finds that it is much more difficult than expected.
Trace portrays an emotionally tortured individual who suffers from the memory of what seems to be the biggest love he ever had in his life. Despite his many attempts to walk away and to forget, everything he does right down to the women he meets seems to remind him of her. To make the song more effective Trace is backed by no more than a piano with a production similar to Jennifer Nettles’ powerful take onĀ ”Stay”.
powerful balled + Trace’s masterful vocals + simplified production = masterpiece
Trace and his crew are taking a huge risk by offering not only a powerful balled from an artist who has made hits out of rock/country anthems, but also by offering up a song so simple that radio could easily see it as a waste of time. On one hand it could be embracedby the country music community, as “Stay” was, and on the other hand it is possible that country radio could easily drop it as they did with Rodney Atkins “Invisibly Shaken”. Hopefully radio will open their ears and realize that this is a work of art. Genuine, sincere, and heartfelt, this song gives the entire country music playlist a run for its money.
Grade: A+
